The Best Way to Paint Walls (What Actually Matters)
There’s no magic “fast and easy” shortcut to a flawless wall finish. The two things that make the biggest difference are:
Prep the surface well
Work in steady, manageable sections
Do those two things and your paint will look smoother, last longer, and cover better.
Step 1: Gather the Right Tools
The right tools make painting easier—and your results noticeably better.
Roller cover (nap) guide:
3/8" nap: best for most smooth to lightly textured walls
1/4" nap: best for very smooth walls and higher-sheen finishes
1/2"–3/4" nap: best for rough or heavily textured walls
What you’ll want on hand:
Roller frame + roller cover
Paint tray + liner
Extension pole (makes rolling easier + more even)
Stepladder
2"–2.5" angled sash brush for cutting in
Drop cloths + painter’s tape (if needed)
Spackle/patch + sanding sponge (for repairs)
Pro tip: If your roller cover is brand new, a quick rinse and dry can reduce lint—especially helpful on smoother walls.
Step 2: Clean + Prep the Walls
Prep is where great paint jobs begin.
Wash most walls with warm water and a soft sponge
Patch holes and dents, then sand smooth
Wipe off dust after sanding
If you see mildew, remove it completely before painting
Prime where needed (repairs, stains, big color changes)

Step 3: Cut In First (Edges & Corners)
“Cutting in” means painting the edges before rolling.
Use your angled sash brush to paint along:
ceiling lines
corners
trim and molding
around windows and doors
around outlets/switches (turn off power where appropriate)
Step 4: Load Your Roller the Right Way
Pour paint into a lined tray
Roll along the tray ramp to load evenly
Avoid dunking the roller completely (that’s when drips and splatter happen)
The goal: fully loaded, not dripping.
Step 5: Roll Top to Bottom (In Small Sections)
Work in manageable sections so your paint stays blendable.
Start near the top and roll downward
Overlap each pass by about 3–5 inches
Use light pressure—let the roller and paint do the work
Step 6: Reload + Avoid Streaks and Lap Marks
Each time you reload:
start in an unpainted area
then roll back into the previous section to blend
Key technique: keep a wet edge. If a section dries before you blend into it, you’re more likely to see lap marks.
Step 7: Dry, Recoat, and Let It Cure
Most walls look best with two coats for full coverage and richer color.
Check the label for dry times
Let coat 1 dry fully before coat 2
Give the paint time to cure before reinstalling plates or hanging décor
